PSHE – Personal, Social, Health & Economic

At Teynham Primary School, PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) is an important part of our curriculum. Children from Year R through to Year 6 have weekly PSHE sessions, following ‘Jigsaw’, a differentiated, whole school scheme.

Children cover six different units throughout the year, with themes revisited and built upon each year, at an age appropriate level.

Each of the units has a strong emphasis on wellbeing, developing the children’s understanding of both themselves and others, helping them grow in empathy, confidence and resilience. Many themes are revisited and re-enforced through other areas of the curriculum, for example exploring online safety and healthy lifestyle choices through Science.

Lessons begin with a time of focusing on the ‘Jigsaw Charter’, establishing a safe and supportive learning environment:

  • We take turns to speak
  • We use kind and positive words
  • We listen to each other
  • We have the right to pass
  • We only use names when giving compliments or when being positive
  • We respect each other’s privacy (confidentiality)

A time of reflection and mindfulness is also a key part of each session, helping children to develop the ability to focus on what is happening in that moment, becoming aware of their environment and what they are sensing and feeling in that moment. Learning takes place in many different forms during the lessons, with use of discussions, video clips, drama, individual reflection and group activities.

In addition to weekly Jigsaw sessions, teachers will also regularly discuss and explore topics which have arisen within the class, responding to the children’s personal needs
