History

History at the school is led by Mrs Bilton.

At Teynham Primary School, history KS1 and KS2 objectives are taught as part of cross-curricular topic work.  History objectives are covered by numerous topics within KS2 lessons. To guarantee full coverage, the complete list of objectives are linked with a topic that can best employ the taught skills into a real world context.

In Early Years, children are enabled to develop their historical knowledge and skills by understanding themselves and the world around them, and developing a sense of their place in time.

A high-quality history education will help pupils at Teynham School gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It will inspire our pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. It should equip pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. History will help our pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Long term History plan

Knowledge Organisers
Across Key Stage 2, we use Knowledge  Organisers for History in books and on displays in classrooms. These support children with the key vocabulary and concepts that are going to be covered during a topic. Children can refer back to this to identify word definitions, use timelines/dates of key events and to identify where their current learning fits in with previous learning.

We endeavour to deliver the History curriculum with enrichment opportunities in the form of experiences, workshops, trips and visitors.

*Year 1 were visited by Faversham Museum with a range of toys from the past.

*Folkestone Museum visited Year 2, bringing artefacts, to introduce Walter Tull and explore his significance. Year 2 also had a Suffragette day including dress up, making rosettes and banners and acting out a protest.

*Year 3 explored their Through the Ages topic with cave paintings, using Lego to build Stonehenge and creating Stone Age clay pottery.

*Year 4 have made strong cross-curricular links through their Invasion topic by writing Norse myths and weaving in Art.

*An archaeological dig helped Year 5 understand what it would mean to be an archaeologist discovering Shang Dynasty artefacts.

*Year 6 explored African culture in their Maafa topic.
