Phonics

Phonics

The children in our school show a great enthusiasm for reading and we want children to develop positive lifelong reading habits. Reading is taught through a structured approach using the Little Wandle programme. For early readers the book is matched to the phonic sound they are learning.

Reception
Phonics is taught from Week 2 in Reception, showing that we prioritise reading and are ambitious for all our pupils.
Oral blending is central to our phonics teaching. It is woven into all lessons, particularly Phase 2 and in the early reading practice sessions with wordless books.

Key Stage One
Little Wandle Books are fully decodable and matched to Little Wandle progression.
We have 3 reading sessions a week and the same books are sent home, providing children with plenty of opportunities to practise their skills and increase fluency.

How do we work with parents?

  • Parent phonics workshops in EYFS, with information about how we teach phonics and how to support reading at home.
  • Parents invited to come in and watch Guided Reading sessions in Year 1.
  • Parents invited to watch Phonics sessions in Year 1 to see how we teach.
  • Phonics Screening Check (PSC) Workshops in Year 1 to provide parents with more information about the PSC.
