Year 6 blog
Topic
We are thoroughly enjoying our new History topic: ‘Britain at War’. The children have been very enthusiastic throughout our opening sessions. Some children have come to school and shared interesting family stories and artefacts relating to the war. This week, we have written non-chronological report explaining the various causes of World War 1 (WW1). Children have now moved their focus to the Second World War.
The children had a fantastic opportunity to learn about local wartime history in a workshop with Faversham museum. The museum volunteers came with a variety of resources and stories to help the children understand the impact of the war on their local area.
Reading
We have started a new class novel. ‘Private Peaceful’ by Michael Morpurgo is a classic tale which links very well with our war topic. The children have enjoyed the first few chapters of the text; familiarising themselves with a new set of characters and themes.
Maths
In maths, we have been focusing on practical maths skills. The children have been learning about the salaries of different jobs and how tax is deducted. Children then researched the salary of their dream jobs and had to work out what the salary would be after tax.
English
In English, children have been debating whether the under 16 social media ban is a good idea. The children held a debate in class and will now use the arguments raised to write their own balanced argument.
