This term we have continued with our ‘coastlines’ focus in English and geography, with a particular emphasis on the human geography of seaside towns. We are beginning to write a fact file about Herne Bay, before moving on to describing how Herne Bay pier has changed over time, and writing a persuasive email encouraging tourists to visit Herne Bay. In our writing we are using commas to separate items in a list, adjectives to make our writing more interesting, and conjunctions to help us to express more complex ideas. In class we are coming to the end of Michael Morpurgo’s The Puffin Keeper, after which we will share some of Atinuke’s wonderful Anna Hibiscus stories, in support of this term’s ‘compassion’ value. These class books are in addition to our ‘reading practice sessions’ on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, where the children read their phonics/fluency books in small groups with guidance and support from a teacher. We hope you have continued to enjoy listening to your child reading their phonics/fluency books to you, and that you have valued the opportunity to share their weekly ‘book for pleasure’ at home. Thank you for remembering to return both books each Wednesday so they can be used by other children.
In maths we are learning the principles of multiplication and division, and are beginning to learn our 2x, 10x and 5x tables. Please ensure that your child is practising their times tables regularly at home (ideally daily) via the Times Tables Rock Stars website (log-on details are the same as for NumBots – a password reminder will be sent out at the end of week 2). Children who would appreciate extra support with their foundational maths skills are still able to access the Numbots website for additional practice with place value, addition and subtraction.
Plant survival is our focus in science this term, investigating what elements are essential for seed germination and growth, and observing how plants grow and change over time. We are exploring salvation in RE through the Easter story, are enjoying learning about rhythm, dynamics and pitch via Kilar’s Orawa in music, and in PSHE we are exploring how to stay healthy, including healthy eating, and appropriate use of medicines. Multiskills and Drumba have been our foci in PE, and in computing we have been learning how to use apps to generate pictograms. In art we are learning about flower art, and how we can use different materials to make different representations of flowers.
We look forward to inviting you in to school at the end of STEAM week, to view the children’s work; in the meantime, thank you for your ongoing support for your child’s learning.
